Back Pain
Around 80% of the general adult population will experience low back pain at some time during their life. The spine is made up of a complex system of bones, joints, muscles and ligaments, and anyone of these structures can be the cause of your pain.
The most important step in addressing your low back pain is getting the correct diagnosis, so the appropriate treatment can give you the fastest possible relief.
Disc Injury
An injury to one of your discs is the most common cause of low back pain. The disc may have a small tear, or it may bulge or protrude into the canal that contains your spine, and the exiting nerves. If you would like to learn more about disc injuries click here.
Facet Joint Sprain
Pain due to facet joints often comes on suddenly after a simple movement, and often has associated muscle spasm. Our treatment will aim to settle the initial inflammatory reaction, and get you back moving normally as soon as possible.
Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
Sacroiliac joints are in the back of the pelvis, and account for 10-19% of low back pain. These joints are often injured during lifting activities. If you would like to learn more about sacroiliac joints click here.
"Muscular" Low Back pain
Often when someone is told the problem "is only muscular", they are suffering with Non-specific mechanical low back pain. This is a term used when it is difficult to determine exactly which structure is causing the pain, or when multiple structures are contributing to the pain felt. This usually results from poor postural control of the spine, and exercises are required to improve muscle control and resolve the pain.
These conditions account for the majority of low back pain presenting in our clinic. There are of course other causes, and we pride ourselves on diagnosing what is causing your pain, allowing us to offer you effective evidence based treatments, or referral to other appropriate health professionals when required.
